Out here in the middle of nowhere Arkansas before the Mississippi Bridge, you find a nice option for a steakhouse. It is appropriately named because it looks like you are walking into a Cow Pen. Inside, the restaurant is cleverly divided up into pens with names as Bessie. The restaurant has a lot of menu options...anything from steak to Mexican to Italian, so everyone should be able to find something they like. My first time here, I had their Cow Pen special steak. Marinated and very juicy and cooked just the way I like. There is a salad bar with several ingredients to choose from but the best part is the homemade dressings. I have had the Comeback Sauce, which is a spicy ranch, and Wine and Cheese. I couldn't get enough of both of them. The second time, I wanted the pork chop stuffed with sausage and cream cheese. They were out of it so I went with the Chicken Alfredo. It was good but nothing special. I was more pleased with my steak the first time around. However, when I have ate here both times, I have felt aggravated with the prices. Maybe it's because there is no Outback at least 150 miles around but all the steaks are all over $20, easily. The steak I had wasn't that much better than one I could get from a steakhouse chain. I can't think of any entree under $11. And is the salad bar made of gold? Because of getting the salad bar with my meal, I get lettuce, tomato, and dressing but if I want cheese and everything else it's plus $3.50? Add that to my entree and chances are you are going to drop $30 a person. If you are willing to spend a little extra than most places, you will be pleased. Considering the location, where else are you going to choose for a steakhouse?

Good, very good meal. Wife enjoyed her plate and LOVED the salad bar. My steak was good, tender and pleasing too. Nice atmosphere, we were there early so not busy then. Recommended eating

Not as good as I remembered from when I did live in the area. My steak was overcooked and so was my son's salmon. The Teriyaki sauce made the salmon worse. Naked salmon would have been a big improvement. If you must eat here I suggest sticking with the Mexican fare.

The scenery was nice and rustic had a fresh update. Waitress was very courteous. I had a steak and it was good, but bland A1 perked it right up. "Homemade" fries were very small and grease soaked. My wife had fried fish platter. Fish was pretty good, hush puppies were great. Salad bar had a nice variety but ranch was watered down. Chicken strips didn't really have any flavor. It's a little over priced for what you get ,but if you're in the area it's worth giving it a try.

My husband & I hosted a business meeting here in January. We do this once a month all over the U.S. and he has NEVER had so many positive comments from his customers, nor has a restaurant been any easier to work with at accomodating a large group... They even customized the limited menu with our company name, etc!!! I thought this was an awesome touch, done at no request by us. We had about 15 people attend our dinner, service was good, food was better and it was all around a success. I will definitely be using them again in the future, not only for business, but just a weekend dinner out with hubby. The salad bar & chips with dip were really good. Their portion sizes were pretty big too. I had fried crawfish tails and hubby had a steak on our last "date night" and both entrees were good. They had a couple of guys playing guitar and singing this particular Friday night. I found it annoying, but great atmosphere for most people.

Growing up across the river, the Cow Pen was always a place for "special" dinners. I have many fond memories of eating here. Ownership has changed and they even had to rebuild due to a fire. Nowadays, the Cow Pen does not have the same feeling eating there as I used to. The food is still good, and sometimes great even. Steaks and seafood are usually good choices.

I don't know if anyone recalls my previous review on here but previously I had a two-star review. Not for the food but the experience I had (just a long wait of two-three hours). I'm pointing this out to give a frame of reference for my review now. To show where I'm coming from, I guess. Recently went back to The Cow Pen for another go. Last time, my lower review mainly focused on how long it took before everything was said and done. This time we got a table, orders, and food pretty fast. Everyone seemed to be pretty friendly. Actually, one of the employees even talked to two people with me for a few minutes and was someone my sister and brother-in-law went to school with. Refills came as needed and I have had fewer refills in other places, or at least not as fast. The food, well, once again I had the cheese enchilada dinner (a testament to my previous review where I also wrote I enjoyed them). Actually originally I was planning on getting the Italian Combo but unfortunately the ravioli's are made with meat. But of course that's not the CP's fault I didn't want it (I'm sure it's good--I just don't eat much in the way of meat usually) so I went with the other choice I had in mind. For my second visit, everything went pretty well. So in the end, one question remains. Would I suggest someone eat here if I asked? I would say yes, actually.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
